Chapel talk: Cairo to Constantinople. The Photography of Francis Bedford
WEDNESDAY 12 JUNE 2013 BOOK NOW
7.30pm to 8.30pm. Doors open at 7pm.
In 1862, the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) was sent on a four-month educational tour of the Middle East. He was accompanied by the British photographer Francis Bedford, the first photographer to travel on a royal tour. Bedford was one of the leading photographers of the day and is currently the subject of an exhibition at The Queen's Gallery, Palace of Holyroodhouse which is due to be staged at Buckingham palace in Autumn 2014.

The tour took the Prince to Egypt, Palestine and the Holy Land, Syria, Lebanon, Turkey and Greece, where he met rulers, politicians and other notable figures and travelled in a manner unassociated with royalty – by horse and camping out in tents. On the royal party’s return to England, Bedford’s work was displayed in what was described as ‘the most important photographic exhibition that has hitherto been placed before the public’. The photographs that Bedford took are today considered to be his finest work.

Bedford died in 1894 and is buried in Highgate Cemetery West. Dr Sophie Gordon will talk about Bedford’s life and career, concentrating on his Middle Eastern photographs and his relationship with the royal family.

DR SOPHIE GORDON
Dr Gordon is Senior Curator of Photographs at the Royal Collection. She has been with the Royal Collection for seven years and during that time has published widely on 19th and 20th century photography, including The Heart of the Great Alone: Scott, Shackleton and Antarctic Photography (2010).

"Military tour of Highgate Cemetery West"
SATURDAY 22 JUNE 2013 6.30pm until about 8pm Book now
The British armed forces in the 19th century ruled a large part of the world. Not a year of Queen Victoria’s reign passed without armed conflict. This ranged from major wars such as the Crimea, The Indian Revolt and The Boer War, to an endless succession of campaigns, skirmishes, and expeditions. As well as warriors, forces served as explorers, political officers, diplomats, administrators and infrastructure engineers. This special guided tour of Highgate Cemetery West will be led by Richard Tewkesbury. We will visit the graves of many individuals, who provide a fascinating insight to the period, together with Commonwealth War Graves from both World Wars.

"Visit to Nunhead Cemetery"
SATURDAY 6 JULY 2013 2.15pm until about 4.15pm Book now
In association with the Friends of Nunhead Cemetery. An opportunity to join friends and colleagues from Highgate Cemetery on a visit to our sister cemetery in South London, consecrated in 1840. The Friends of Nunhead Cemetery claim that Nunhead is perhaps the least known, but most attractive, of the great Victorian cemeteries of London. It is certainly the most interesting to us, as we can see not only what the London Cemetery Company got up to at their second cemetery, but also to compare its subsequent history with our own.

"The Dickens Connection - Evening guided tour"
THURSDAY 18 JULY 2013 7pm until about 8.30pm Book now
Charles Dickens often walked the paths of Highgate Cemetery and chose it as the burial place of his wife Catherine, their baby Dora and his parents. By visiting these and other family graves together with those of several of his friends and associates, this special tour gives you a fascinating insight into Dickens’s professional and personal life.
This tour also offers a rare oportunity to go off the beaten track in the famed romantic wooded landscape with ivy-clad tombs - few places in London are more beautiful on a summer evening than Highgate Cemetery.
